Condoms & Protection

Protect Yourself – With Condoms

Condoms have long been used to prevent pregnancy and infection. But the Journal of American College Health study showed that fewer than 40% of sexually active students reported consistent use. Many students didn’t use condoms at all in the previous month.

Truth be told, many students don’t know the correct way to put on a condom. If you find these facts surprising, we’ll also have to remind you to look both ways before crossing the street.

Whether you’re male or female, if you’re sexually active, keep condoms on hand, inspect for damage, and check the package date, discarding any old ones. And be firm: if your partner tries to pressure you into going without a condom, don’t buy into the argument or negotiate the terms. Say “No thanks; I’ll meet you at the drug store.”

  • Latex condoms – If you do use latex condoms, you can be confident that – when used properly (from the beginning to the end of each sexual encounter and with any and all partners) – they are 98% effective. While providing an effective barrier for body fluids, reducing unplanned pregnancy, preventing STIs, they are not foolproof!
  • Female condoms – These polyurethane devices are used vaginally.
  • Dental dams – This latex sheet provides protection from bodily fluids during oral contact.
