Contraceptives

Thanks to advances in recent decades, the menu of contraceptive options is quite generous. Discuss with your doctor which one is best for you and which ones you will require examination, fitting, and/or a prescription. It is important to remember that only condoms can reduce your STI risk! Contraception options include:

  • Condoms – Latex, polyurethane (for people allergic to latex), or female condoms
  • Hormonal contraceptives for women – The Pill, injections, patches, and vaginal rings
  • Spermicides – Jellies and foams, preferably water-based
  • Diaphragms and sponges – Provide, with spermicides, a physical barrier
  • IUDs – Intrauterine devices that must be inserted by a medical professional
  • “Plan B” – An emergency contraceptive, this “morning after” pill can reduce risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex within a limited timeframe
  • Vasectomy – For men who don’t plan to sire children

For a complete list and description of these and other contraceptive methods, view Planned Parenthood’s informative Birth Control page.
