A Few Words About Depression
While we don’t propose to discuss all of the possible problems that directly affect college students, we feel it’s important not to overlook depression, because it is often the outcome of so many of the issues listed here.
Depression can be a temporary thing or it can be an ongoing issue, but in either case, it’s a disorder that should be taken seriously. Its onset can be triggered by any number of things, as you well know: a sudden change or loss, a crisis or disappointment, persistent stress, and much more. If you’ve been undergoing treatment for depression or any other emotional disorders when you start school – whether you rely on therapy, medication, or both – make sure that you continue to manage your condition.
If you develop signs of depression after beginning school, don’t try to tough it out alone. Consult your family doctor, if you have one, talk with your family, and visit your campus health center well before emotional swings impact your academic progress or affect your ability to get along with other people.
