Know Your School Policies
Your college handbook will clearly spell out conduct codes and policies on drug and alcohol use, including penalties and consequences. For example, some campuses are dry, meaning that alcohol isn’t permitted in any buildings or public areas. Other schools restrict alcohol service to certain on-campus dining areas and events. Or they may allow it for educational purposes, such as hospitality courses focusing on beverage service. It doesn’t hurt to be familiar with the city and state’s alcohol laws, either. Some towns in which colleges are located may be dry, although this is becoming a rarity.
Even if you live off-campus, be sure you read up on school policies. If you’re hosting a gathering, legal hassles associated with drinking and drugs may negatively impact your status as a student. This includes serving underage students, providing fake IDs, allowing illicit drug use on your premises, and any acts of violence or vandalism. If you think it's not your business if your uninvited guests are doing drugs on your premises, think again. You can be held responsible for the behavior of people you don't even know.
