Respect Local Customs
You’ve heard of the term “Ugly American?” When foreign travelers neglect to familiarize themselves with the local customs of their destination countries, unfortunate misunderstandings, or worse, can occur. From body language to eye contact to public drunkenness, there are rules in each culture. Even language can reveal your knowledge or ignorance. For example, using the informal form of “you” in French, Italian, Spanish, or German when speaking to strangers or your elders is considered discourteous.
Do your homework. Learn beforehand about social conventions and local laws. Not only will you show your respect, you’ll impress people with your fine manners!
