A Growing Trend in Caring
If you think community service during college is an old-fashioned pastime whose time has gone, you’ll be surprised to learn that students are more civic-minded than ever before. The rate of campus volunteerism has shot up 20 percent since 2002. A 2006 report, “College Students Helping America,” states that 3.3 million college students volunteered in 2005 – nearly 600,000 more students than three years earlier. Maybe this can be attributed to the wakeup call of 9/11, but there is definitely a positive trend among college students – the desire to care about fellow human beings and be there for others during a time of need. And given the current economic climate, the time of need is now for more and more people.
