
Honor Societies – More Than a Social Network
It may not happen right away, but at some point in your college life you may just open an envelope that says “Due to your excellent academic achievements, we are pleased to invite you to join…” You’ve been tapped to apply for an honor society!
Honor societies, like Greek organizations, also come under the category of exclusive membership organization. In fact, some honor societies are Greek groups. They, too, are usually chapters of national associations that align with scholastic interests, although colleges frequently establish their distinctive honor societies as well.
Members earn eligibility through strong academic standing and affiliation with a particular profession or major. What are the primary benefits of membership? You can qualify for lucrative scholarships and grants, attend conferences, and gain professional networking connections
The prestige that you gain by identifying honors membership in your résumé is a distinctive plus. Potential employers and graduate schools will pay attention to your affiliations. But before you decide to join, make sure you’re thoroughly familiar with its function and purpose, the expected level of commitment, and any fees that are required. Talks to the assigned advisor on campus and definitely talk to current members.
