Living-Learning Communities
Do you want a living arrangement that’s more meaningful than a typical residence hall? You might be interested in applying for a Living-Learning Community. Your college may have established one or more of these residential arrangements.
What are Living-Learning Communities? They allow students to apply for residential arrangements based on their common interests in certain themes or academic programs. LLCs improve academic effectiveness and foster peer and faculty support.
On larger campuses, LLCs can provide a small-campus setting. Sometimes an entire building is dedicated for this purpose; at other campuses a section or floor of a residence hall is reserved. Types of LLC categories include but aren’t limited to:
Academic majors
Faith-based interests
First-year students, often in the same academic program
Global living, for international students and domestic students
Healthy living
Honors and scholars programs
Leadership
Professional interests
Sounds interesting? If you’re eligible for this type of living arrangement, it won’t just be a case of hanging out with, for instance, the Veterinary Science or Nursing students in your program. LLCs usually involve participation and planning of special activities and events, such as programs, workshops, presentations, and trips designed to bolster academic enrichment, enhance social support, and strengthen professional development.
